Aims, Hypotheses and Research Questions

When sociologists carry out research, they do not begin by randomly asking questions or collecting facts. They begin by deciding exactly what they want to study and how they want to study it. That is why it is so important to understand the difference between aims, research questions and hypotheses.

These ideas are central to Cambridge OCR A Level Sociology because they shape the whole research design of a study. They also link to one of the biggest debates in sociology: should sociologists begin with clear, testable ideas, or should they begin with open-ended questions that allow people to explain their own experiences in their own words?

Understanding this topic will help you not only with research methods, but also with wider theoretical debates between positivist and interpretivist approaches to sociology.


Why does this matter?

Every piece of sociological research needs a starting point. Before choosing interviews, questionnaires, observations or official statistics, the researcher needs to know what they are trying to find out.

That starting point might be a broad aim, a narrower research question, or a more precise hypothesis. Each one plays a slightly different role.

This matters because a study on something like class inequality in education can be approached in very different ways. One sociologist may want to measure whether parental income affects GCSE results. Another may want to explore how working-class students feel about school. Both are studying education, but they are starting from different assumptions and asking different kinds of questions.

For students new to sociology, this is an important lesson: research is not just about gathering information. It is about making choices. Those choices shape the evidence collected, the conclusions reached, and even the kind of sociology being carried out.


What is a research aim?

A research aim is the broad purpose of the study. It tells us the general topic or issue the sociologist wants to investigate.

For example:

  • To investigate the relationship between social class and educational achievement.
  • To explore the impact of social media on young people.
  • To examine public attitudes towards crime and punishment.
  • To study gender differences in subject choice at school.

These are all aims because they are quite broad. They tell us the direction of the research, but they do not yet explain exactly how the topic will be investigated.

A good way to think about an aim is as the big picture. It sets out what the researcher is interested in overall. It does not need to include every detail at this stage, but it gives the research a clear focus.

For example, a sociologist might have the aim:

To investigate ethnic differences in stop and search experiences.

This tells us the topic, but it leaves open many possible directions. The researcher might later choose to investigate official police data, interview young people about their experiences, or compare media reports with crime statistics. The aim provides the general focus, while later stages make the study more precise.


What is a research question?

A research question is more specific than a research aim. It takes the broad purpose of the study and turns it into a clearer question that can guide the investigation.

For example, from the broad aim:

To investigate the relationship between social class and educational achievement

we could develop research questions such as:

  • How does parental income affect GCSE attainment?
  • How do working-class students describe their experiences of school?
  • Do students from different class backgrounds receive different levels of teacher support?

Each of these questions is more focused than the original aim. They narrow the research down and make it easier to decide which methods might be most useful.

A research question often gives clues about the kind of data the researcher wants. For example, the question “How does parental income affect GCSE attainment?” suggests a study using measurable data such as exam results or household income figures. By contrast, the question “How do working-class students describe their experiences of school?” suggests a more qualitative approach, perhaps using interviews or group discussions.

Research questions are especially useful when the researcher wants to explore an issue rather than make a fixed prediction from the start. They can be quite open-ended, allowing the sociologist to discover things they may not have expected.

Another example might be:

Aim: To explore changing family relationships in Britain.
Research question: How do teenagers describe their relationships with parents in dual-earner families?

This question is focused enough to guide research, but still open enough to allow detailed and varied answers.


What is a hypothesis?

A hypothesis is a clear, specific and testable statement that predicts a relationship between variables.

For example:

  • Students from higher-income households are more likely to achieve higher GCSE grades.
  • Young people who spend more than three hours a day on social media are more likely to report lower self-esteem.
  • Areas with higher unemployment will have higher recorded crime rates.
  • Boys are more likely than girls to be excluded from school.

Unlike a research question, a hypothesis does not ask. It predicts. It sets out what the researcher expects to find.

A good hypothesis should be testable, meaning it must be possible to gather evidence that supports or challenges it. It should also be falsifiable, meaning it must be possible for the evidence to show that it is wrong.

This matters because sociological hypotheses are meant to be investigated using evidence, not simply assumed to be true. For example, the claim “social media is destroying society” is far too vague to be a strong sociological hypothesis. A stronger version would be something like:

Teenagers who spend more than four hours a day on image-based social media platforms are more likely to report body image dissatisfaction than those who spend less than one hour a day on such platforms.

This is much more useful because it can be investigated. It includes clear groups, measurable behaviour and a possible outcome.

Hypotheses are often associated with more scientific styles of research because they allow sociologists to test clear predictions.


Variables: what are they?

A variable is something that can change or vary. In many hypotheses, researchers are interested in whether one variable is related to another.

Usually, there are two key types:

  • independent variable
  • dependent variable

The independent variable is the factor that may influence change.
The dependent variable is the outcome being measured.

For example, in the hypothesis:

Students who spend more time revising will achieve higher grades

the independent variable is time spent revising, while the dependent variable is grades achieved.

In another example:

Children from larger families are more likely to share household responsibilities

the independent variable is family size, and the dependent variable is level of household responsibility.

Variables are important because they help sociologists make their ideas more precise. Instead of simply saying they want to study “education” or “identity”, they can identify exactly what factors they want to compare.

This is particularly useful in quantitative research, where the goal is often to identify relationships between factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, achievement, income or behaviour.


Correlation and cause and effect

One of the biggest mistakes in social research is assuming that because two things are linked, one must cause the other. This is where the distinction between correlation and cause and effect becomes important.

A correlation means there is a relationship between two variables. For example, sociologists might find that students with high attendance also tend to get better exam results. That is a correlation.

But this does not automatically prove cause and effect. It does not prove that attendance alone caused the better grades. It could be that students with strong parental support are both more likely to attend school regularly and more likely to do well in exams. In that case, parental support may also be an important factor.

Another example is crime. A researcher might find that areas with more police officers report more crime. That is a correlation, but it would be too simple to conclude that police presence causes crime. It may be that areas with high crime are given more police officers in response.

In sociology, human behaviour is shaped by many influences at the same time. That makes it difficult to prove simple cause and effect in the way that a natural scientist might in a laboratory experiment.

This is why sociologists must be careful in how they interpret findings. Correlation can be useful, but it is not the same as proof of causation.


Operationalisation: turning ideas into evidence

Many sociological concepts are abstract. Ideas such as class, identity, racism, achievement, power or religiosity are important, but they are not automatically measurable. To study them, researchers often need to use operationalisation.

Operationalisation means turning an abstract concept into something that can be observed, measured or identified in research.

For example, if a sociologist wants to study educational achievement, they must decide what that means in practice. It could be measured through:

  • GCSE grades
  • test scores
  • teacher assessments
  • progress measures
  • university entry rates

If a sociologist wants to study social class, they may operationalise it through:

  • parental occupation
  • household income
  • housing status
  • eligibility for free school meals

If they want to study religiosity, they might measure it through:

  • attendance at worship
  • frequency of prayer
  • self-reported belief in God
  • participation in religious festivals

Operationalisation is important because the way a researcher measures a concept can affect the results. For example, measuring class by income may produce slightly different findings than measuring it by occupation. Measuring educational achievement through GCSE grades may ignore other forms of success such as confidence, creativity or later career progress.

This shows that even apparently simple research decisions can be debated. Interpretivists, in particular, may argue that operationalisation sometimes oversimplifies complex human experiences.


Different theoretical perspectives

Aims, research questions and hypotheses do not appear out of nowhere. They are often influenced by the sociologist’s theoretical perspective.

Positivists

Positivists believe sociology should be as scientific as possible. They often prefer research that starts with a hypothesis, because this allows them to test relationships between variables in a clear and structured way.

A positivist might begin with a statement such as:

Students from lower-income households are more likely to have lower attendance rates than students from higher-income households.

This kind of approach usually involves:

  • measurable variables
  • clear operationalisation
  • structured methods such as questionnaires
  • numerical data
  • attempts to identify patterns, correlations and possibly cause and effect

Positivists are more likely to value objectivity, reliability and the ability to compare findings across large groups.

Interpretivists

Interpretivists take a different approach. They argue that society cannot be understood fully just by measuring variables, because human beings are not like chemicals in a lab. People attach meanings to their actions, and those meanings matter.

Interpretivists are therefore more likely to begin with open-ended research questions.

For example:

How do excluded pupils describe their experiences of school discipline?

or

How do young people understand the role of social media in shaping their identity?

These questions are designed to explore meanings and experiences, rather than test a fixed prediction.

Interpretivists often prefer methods such as unstructured interviews, participant observation and ethnography because these allow people to express themselves in more detail.

Why does this matter?

This debate matters because it shows that research methods are never just technical decisions. They are linked to wider beliefs about what society is like and how it should be studied.

A positivist may believe the best sociology is precise, measurable and evidence-based. An interpretivist may believe the best sociology captures how people see and experience the social world. As a result, they may start their studies in very different ways.


Should research begin with a hypothesis?

There are strong arguments in favour of beginning research with a hypothesis.

First, a hypothesis gives research a very clear focus. It tells the researcher exactly what they are looking for and what relationship they expect to find. This can make the research easier to plan, easier to organise and easier to analyse.

Second, hypotheses work well with quantitative methods such as questionnaires, experiments and statistical analysis. They are especially useful when researchers want to compare groups, measure social trends or test whether a relationship exists between variables.

For example, if a sociologist wants to know whether there is a link between parental education and children’s achievement, a hypothesis can provide a straightforward starting point:

Children whose parents have been to university are more likely to achieve higher GCSE grades.

This can then be tested using large-scale data.

Third, hypotheses can make sociology appear more scientific. Because a hypothesis is testable and falsifiable, it can be checked by other researchers. This can increase reliability and help sociology build up evidence over time.

However, there are also criticisms.

A hypothesis can narrow the research too much. It may encourage the researcher to focus only on certain factors while ignoring others. It may also build in assumptions from the start.

For example, a researcher who begins with the hypothesis “social media lowers self-esteem” may overlook the possibility that social media can also provide support, creativity, friendship and self-expression.

Interpretivists argue that starting with a rigid hypothesis may force complex human experiences into neat categories that do not reflect real life. It may reduce validity by imposing the researcher’s own ideas instead of allowing participants’ meanings to emerge.

So while hypotheses are useful, they are not always the best place to begin.


Should research begin with open-ended questions?

Open-ended research questions can be a better starting point when sociologists want to understand experiences, meanings, identities or social interactions.

For example:

  • How do young carers describe the pressures they face at school?
  • How do teenage boys talk about masculinity in friendship groups?
  • How do students experience being labelled by teachers?
  • How do migrants describe belonging and identity in British society?

These questions do not assume a simple answer. Instead, they allow respondents to explain things in their own way. This can lead to richer and more detailed findings.

Open-ended questions are especially useful when the researcher is exploring a topic that is not yet well understood, or when they want to avoid imposing assumptions on participants. They can reveal unexpected themes that a fixed hypothesis might miss.

For example, a study on students and school rules may discover that some pupils see strict rules as unfair and oppressive, while others see them as helpful and protective. A closed hypothesis might miss this range of views.

This can make research more valid because it may capture social reality in a deeper and more authentic way.

But open-ended approaches also have weaknesses. They can produce large amounts of detailed data that are harder to compare and harder to generalise from. They may also be criticised for being less reliable, since different researchers might interpret the same data in different ways.

So again, the key point is not that one approach is always right. It depends on the purpose of the research.


Leading and loaded questions

Whatever type of research a sociologist chooses, they must be careful about how they word questions.

A leading question suggests the answer the researcher wants.

For example:

Don’t you agree that school rules are too strict?

This is leading because it nudges the respondent towards agreeing.

A loaded question includes assumptions or biased language.

For example:

Why do unfair teachers target working-class boys?

This is loaded because it assumes teachers are unfair and that working-class boys are definitely being targeted.

These kinds of questions are a problem because they reduce validity. They may influence what the respondent says rather than uncovering their genuine views.

A more neutral version would be:

  • How do students feel about school rules?
  • Do students believe teachers respond differently to different groups?
  • How do working-class boys describe their experience of discipline in school?

These questions are better because they allow a wider range of responses and avoid building in assumptions from the start.

This is an important reminder that good sociology is not just about having the right topic. It is also about asking questions in a careful and balanced way.


Quick summary

The difference between these key terms is simple, but very important.

A research aim is the broad purpose of the study.
A research question is a more focused question that guides the investigation.
A hypothesis is a clear, testable prediction about the relationship between variables.

These starting points shape the research design of a study. They influence the methods used, the kinds of evidence collected, and the conclusions that can be drawn.

Final judgement

Sociological research should not always begin in exactly the same way.

If the goal is to measure patterns, compare groups and test whether variables are related, then a hypothesis can be a very effective starting point. It gives the research clarity, structure and focus.

If the goal is to understand meanings, explore experiences and allow new ideas to emerge, then open-ended research questions may be a better place to begin.

The strongest sociological judgement is that the best starting point depends on the kind of research being carried out. Different topics require different approaches. Research into school achievement, crime rates or voting behaviour may benefit from clear hypotheses. Research into identity, family relationships or experiences of discrimination may benefit more from open-ended questions.

In other words, the choice between hypotheses and open-ended questions is not just about technique. It reflects deeper debates about what sociology is and how social life can best be understood.
