Media doesn’t affect everyone in the same way. Different people interpret, respond to, and are influenced by media in different ways. In this activity, you will read a series of fictional accounts showing how individuals react to media messages. Each scenario links to one or more key models of media. Your task is to identify which model(s) best explain the reactions and consider why the responses differ.
Key Models of Media:
- Hypodermic Syringe (Magic Bullet) Model – Media has a direct, immediate, and powerful effect on passive audiences.
- Two-Step Flow Model – Media messages are filtered through opinion leaders, who influence the attitudes and behaviours of others.
- Uses and Gratifications Model – Audiences actively select and interpret media to meet personal needs or desires.
- Cultural/Interpretive Approaches – Media is shaped by culture, and audiences interpret it differently depending on their social context, values, or experiences.
Instructions:
- Read each fictional account carefully.
- Identify which media model(s) the scenario illustrates. Some accounts may show more than one model.
- Explain your reasoning in the table provided, including:
- How the individual responds to the media.
- Why this response fits a particular model.
- Any other factors that might influence their reaction (e.g., social networks, personal experience, cultural background).
- Consider any limitations of the model(s) when explaining this behaviour.
Extension / Challenge:
- Can you think of real-life examples that mirror these fictional accounts?
- Are there reactions to media that none of these models fully explain? How might media influence people in ways not captured by these theories?
Outcome:
By the end of this activity, you will have a stronger understanding of how different media models explain audience behaviour, as well as an appreciation for the complexities of media influence in the real world.
