Origins, key features, classic research and contemporary applications
Positivism is one of the most important starting points in A Level Sociology because it helps students understand a core idea in the relationship between theory and methods: sociologists do not choose methods at random – they choose them based on what they believe counts as valid knowledge.
For Cambridge OCR A Level Sociology, positivism is especially useful because it introduces students to a clear argument: society can be studied scientifically, in a similar way to the natural sciences. This gives students a framework for understanding why some sociologists prefer quantitative methods, large-scale patterns, and the search for cause-and-effect relationships.
Where does positivism come from?
Positivism is usually traced back to Auguste Comte, who argued that society could be studied scientifically and that sociology should identify laws governing social life. Comte believed that just as science had transformed understanding of the natural world, a scientific sociology could improve understanding of social order and change.
Later sociologists, especially Émile Durkheim, developed this approach more directly. Durkheim argued that sociologists should study social facts — external social forces (such as norms, institutions, rates and patterns) that shape individual behaviour. For positivists, this means sociologists should focus on observable, measurable evidence, rather than relying only on people’s personal meanings.
This is a useful point to stress with students: positivism is not simply “liking numbers.” It is a theoretical position about what society is like and how it should be studied.
The key features of positivism
When introducing positivism, I find it helps to organise the topic around five core features:
1) The scientific method
Positivists argue sociology should use a systematic, evidence-based approach. This often includes:
- identifying a research problem
- forming a hypothesis
- collecting data
- looking for patterns
- testing explanations
Students do not need to assume sociology is identical to physics or biology, but they should understand that positivists want sociology to be as scientific as possible.
2) Objectivity
A central value for positivists is objectivity: researchers should remain neutral and avoid letting personal beliefs or political values shape the findings.
This gives you a good classroom link to later debates about value freedom. Even if students later critique positivism, they need to understand why objectivity matters in the positivist tradition.
3) Reliability
Positivists prefer methods that are reliable, meaning they can be repeated and produce similar results. This is one reason they often prefer:
- structured questionnaires
- structured interviews
- official statistics
- (sometimes) experiments or quasi-experimental designs
Standardised methods are attractive because they reduce variation in data collection and make comparisons easier.
4) Correlation and causation
Positivists are interested in identifying patterns in society, including correlations (relationships between variables), and in some cases trying to explain causation (whether one factor helps produce another).
This is a great teaching opportunity because students often confuse the two. Positivists may find strong correlations in social data (for example, class and educational attainment), but proving causation in social life is often more difficult because many variables interact.
5) General laws and social patterns
Positivists often aim to produce broad explanations of social trends rather than highly individual accounts. They are more likely to ask:
- What are the rates?
- What patterns exist?
- Which groups are most affected?
- What variables seem linked?
This macro-level orientation makes positivism especially useful in topics like education, crime, health and demography.
Key research examples teachers can use
Durkheim’s Suicide (1897)
This is the classic positivist example and remains essential. Durkheim used official statistics from different countries to show that suicide rates were not random individual acts, but patterned by social factors such as integration and regulation. Even if students later learn criticisms (e.g. interpretivist challenges over validity), Suicide is excellent for demonstrating positivist logic:
- use of quantitative data
- search for social patterns
- attempt to explain causal relationships
Official statistics in contemporary sociology
You can also show students that positivist-style work is still highly relevant. For example:
- crime trends (ONS crime surveys and police-recorded crime)
- education attainment gaps (DfE and social mobility datasets)
- religious affiliation trends (ONS Census data)
For teaching purposes, this helps students see positivism as a live approach, not just a historical theory.
For example, ONS crime publications continue to distinguish between different data sources and show how large-scale survey data can reveal patterns in violence, theft, fraud and computer misuse. This is exactly the kind of pattern-seeking evidence positivists value.
Likewise, current education statistics show measurable inequalities (for example, disadvantage gaps in attainment), which positivist sociologists might use to identify patterns and test explanations about class, school processes or policy effects.
And ONS religion data (including Census 2021) provides another clear example of large-scale pattern analysis, including changes in religious affiliation and age profiles across groups.
Applying positivism to contemporary society
A really effective way to teach positivism is to ask students: Where do we see “positivist thinking” in everyday public debates?
1) Crime and policing
When governments or media discuss crime “going up” or “going down,” they often rely on statistics and trend data. This reflects a positivist assumption that social problems can be measured and tracked over time.
2) Education performance
Debates around attainment gaps, attendance and outcomes often use quantitative indicators such as grades, progress scores and disadvantage measures. This allows sociologists to compare groups and identify broad social patterns.
3) Religion and social change
Questions about secularisation, religious diversity and generational change often use census and survey data. Positivist approaches help map trends across time and between social groups.
This also helps students see a key strength of positivism: it is often useful for policy-making, because policymakers want measurable evidence, trends and large-scale comparisons.
Common misconceptions to address early
“Positivism = facts, interpretivism = opinions”
Too simple. A better explanation is:
- positivists prioritise measurable patterns and objectivity
- interpretivists prioritise meanings and lived experience
“Quantitative methods automatically prove causation”
They do not. They often show correlation first. Students should learn to ask: What other variables might be involved?
“Positivism is outdated”
It is historically rooted, but still very relevant in contemporary sociology, especially in:
- official data analysis
- survey research
- policy evaluation
- comparative social trends
Teaching tips for Cambridge OCR classes
- Teach positivism through method choice (e.g. “Which method would a positivist choose, and why?”)
- Use Durkheim as the anchor, but connect to current ONS/DfE examples
- Build in a short task on correlation vs causation early on
- Encourage students to use key terms precisely: objectivity, reliability, scientific method, causation, correlation
