Inequality Data Clinic: Helping Cambridge OCR Sociology Students Read Evidence, Not Just Memorise It

One of the most important early lessons in Cambridge OCR A Level Sociology is helping students understand that social inequality cannot be reduced to one figure, one graph or one measure.

Students may already know that some groups have more money, better housing or longer life expectancy than others. However, Section B of Component 2 requires them to go further. They need to recognise patterns and trends, use sociological evidence accurately, and make sensible judgements about what evidence can and cannot show.

The Inequality Data Clinic is a structured carousel activity designed for Session 2 of a scheme of work on Understanding Social Inequalities. It gives students six different ways of measuring inequality and asks them to think like sociologists: What is being measured? What does the evidence show? What are the limitations of this measure?

This reflects OCR’s expectation that students use statistical patterns and trends, concepts and examples, alongside sociological studies, when exploring inequalities relating to social class, gender, ethnicity and age.

What is included?

The downloadable pack contains six A4 data panels covering:

  • income
  • wealth
  • occupation
  • education
  • housing
  • health

Students work in small groups and rotate around each data station. At every station, they complete the same three-part task:

  1. Identify the measure being used.
  2. Describe the pattern shown by the evidence.
  3. Explain one limitation of using that indicator on its own.

The resource also includes a recording grid, a data-language support sheet, a completed model response comparing income and wealth, and a teacher answer guide.

Why use a data clinic?

The activity helps students move beyond vague claims such as “working-class people are disadvantaged” or “there is inequality in Britain”.

Instead, they learn to make more precise sociological statements:

Income inequality shows differences in the money households receive over a period of time, but it does not reveal the value of property, savings or inherited assets.

Wealth inequality may show long-term advantage more clearly than income because wealth can be passed between generations.

Educational attainment can reveal inequality in outcomes, but it does not automatically explain the causes of those differences.

This is particularly useful early in the topic because it establishes a key message that can be returned to throughout the course: inequality is multidimensional. A household may have a reasonable income but insecure housing. A student may achieve highly in education but still face discrimination in the labour market. Someone may live longer but experience poor health for many of those years.

Assessment objective coverage

Cambridge OCR defines AO1 as knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, evidence and research methods; AO2 as applying these to issues; and AO3 as analysing and evaluating them to present arguments, make judgements and draw conclusions.

AO1: Knowledge and understanding

The data panels develop AO1 by introducing students to key measures and concepts used in the study of inequality.

Students encounter terms such as:

  • income
  • wealth
  • assets
  • occupational class
  • educational attainment
  • housing tenure
  • life expectancy
  • healthy life expectancy
  • deprivation
  • living standards

The activity is not simply a retrieval exercise. Students have to identify exactly what each piece of evidence measures. This matters because students often confuse income with wealth, or assume that educational success and social mobility are the same thing.

The model answer comparing income and wealth helps reinforce this distinction before students encounter class-based explanations from Marxism, Weberianism and the New Right later in the unit.

AO2: Application

The recording grid requires students to apply their sociological knowledge to real evidence. Rather than learning abstract definitions in isolation, students use them to interpret patterns in contemporary social life.

For example, students might apply their understanding of inequality by explaining that:

  • income data can reveal differences in disposable resources between households;
  • housing data can show unequal access to stable and secure living conditions;
  • occupational data can highlight differences in job security, autonomy and status;
  • health data can reveal how social advantage and disadvantage affect life chances.

This supports later Section B responses because students need to apply evidence to specific areas of inequality, including work and employment. Cambridge OCR’s suggested studies guide explicitly identifies statistical patterns and trends, concepts and examples as appropriate evidence for this part of the course.

Cambridge

The most valuable part of the activity is the final question at every station: What is one limitation of this measure?

This gives students an accessible introduction to sociological evaluation. They begin to see that no single measure gives a complete picture of inequality.

For example:

These short evaluative comments provide a foundation for later answers. Students are beginning to make judgements about evidence rather than treating every statistic as automatically conclusive.

Suggested lesson structure

Begin with a short whole-class discussion asking students: “How would you measure whether society is unequal?”

Collect suggestions such as income, jobs, grades, housing, health and life expectancy. This gives students an early opportunity to see that inequality has several dimensions.

Place the six A4 panels around the classroom. Divide students into groups and give each group a recording grid. Allow approximately five to seven minutes at each station, depending on lesson length and the confidence of the class.

At every station, students should agree:

  • What is being measured?
  • What is the most important pattern?
  • What does this suggest about social inequality?
  • What is one limitation of relying on this evidence alone?

Bring the class together after the carousel and ask groups to share the most useful and most limited indicator. This usually produces a productive discussion because students often disagree about whether income, wealth, housing or health provides the clearest picture of inequality.

Finish with the income-versus-wealth model answer. Students can annotate where it demonstrates knowledge, application and evaluation.

Where does this fit within the OCR course?

This activity works best near the beginning of Component 2, Section B: Understanding Social Inequalities, after students have been introduced to concepts such as social inequality, life chances and social stratification.

It provides a strong bridge into later lessons on:

  • patterns of social class inequality
  • gender inequality in work and employment
  • ethnicity and labour-market disadvantage
  • health and housing inequalities
  • social mobility
  • functionalist, Marxist, feminist, Weberian and New Right explanations of inequality

OCR’s suggested studies guide includes class evidence such as Rowlingson and Mullineux on income and wealth, Atkinson on inherited wealth, Roberts on social mobility and Gallie on changes to working-class employment. These can be introduced later as students move from broad statistical patterns towards named sociological evidence.
